About ShemLi.org

ShemLi (שם לי) helps you find where your Hebrew name lives in Tanach — by matching the first and last letters of your name to a pasuk with the same letter pair.

What we do

Enter a Hebrew or English name and ShemLi finds a verse whose first and last Hebrew letters match your name's first and last letters. This practice is connected to the segulah mentioned at the end of the Amidah — finding your name encoded in Torah text.

Each name page includes meaning, gematria (mispar hechrachi), gender, category, and the matching pasuk in Hebrew and English when available in our corpus.

Methodology

  • Letter-pair matching: We index Tanach pesukim by their first and last Hebrew letters (excluding nikkud).
  • Name database: 150 Hebrew names with transliterations, meanings, and metadata — curated and enriched from traditional sources.
  • Torah text: Verse text is sourced from established Torah libraries and validated against our letter-pair corpus.
  • Gematria: Standard mispar hechrachi values; see our gematria guide for the full aleph-bet table.

Who it's for

Parents choosing a Hebrew name, adults reconnecting with their name's Torah roots, teachers, and anyone curious about the relationship between names and sacred text. ShemLi is a study and discovery tool — not a substitute for rabbinic guidance.
